Azure Systems Engineer
About this role
TerraPower is seeking an Azure Systems Engineer to manage and optimize Azure Government hosted resources supporting nuclear reactor research and development. This role administers cloud infrastructure for identity management, HPC operations, compute workloads, data management, and AI services in a compliance-driven environment requiring precision and adherence to stringent security standards.
Responsibilities
- —Administer and optimize Azure Government environments, including compute, identity, networking, storage, and PaaS services
- —Design, implement, and maintain secure Azure configurations supporting HPC clusters, AI workflows, and research workloads in compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements
- —Support and integrate Azure CycleCloud Workspace for Slurm for orchestration, scaling, and management of HPC workloads
- —Manage diverse storage solutions (Blob/File, NetApp, Managed Lustre, etc.), ensuring appropriate performance, cost optimization, and compliance with data retention policies
- —Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code (IaC) templates and automation scripts in the TerraPower repository (e.g., Bicep, Terraform, Ansible) for consistent environment deployment and management
- —Partner with DevOps teams to support application deployments and platform services
- —Oversee identity and access management through Entra ID and role-based access control (RBAC) aligned to least-privilege principles
- —Implement and maintain security controls including network segmentation, encryption, monitoring, and compliance reporting consistent with organizational governance requirements
- —Collaborate with Infrastructure Architecture, IT Operations, and Engineering teams to support controlled environments hosting qualified scientific and engineering software
- —Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve performance or availability issues across compute and storage services
- —Support escalation management, ensuring critical or compliance-sensitive issues are promptly routed and tracked to resolution
- —Generate reports on performance, identifying areas for process improvement and communicating trends to leadership
Qualifications
- —Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience managing Azure environments
- —Direct experience working with Azure Government (Azure Gov) services and associated compliance boundaries
- —Proficiency with Azure HPC and workload integration
- —Strong knowledge of Azure storage solutions, performance tuning, and cost management
- —Experience implementing and managing security and compliance controls within Azure environments
- —Familiarity with identity management, Entra ID, and RBAC administration
- —Strong scripting or automation skills (PowerShell, Python, Ansible, or Terraform)
- —Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills
- —Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment supporting multiple concurrent projects and business priorities
- —Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies
Desired
- —Experience in regulated industries (nuclear, energy, aerospace, or federal contracting)
- —Understanding of ITIL service management best practices
