Associate to Staff Engineer - Civil Design Surry
About this role
The Nuclear Design Engineering department at Surry Nuclear Power Station seeks a Civil Design Engineer at the Associate to Staff level to evaluate design modifications to nuclear plant systems, prepare design modification packages, perform structural calculations and analysis, and provide field support for inspections. This is a career-track position where level and compensation are determined by candidate's education, experience, and qualifications (Associate Engineer: 0–2 years; Engineer: 2–5 years; Senior Engineer: 5–8 years; Staff Engineer: 8+ years).
Responsibilities
Evaluate design modifications to nuclear plant systems and assess impact on plant design and licensing basis
Prepare and review design modification packages using the standard design process; develop Site/System/Construction drawings
Perform structural calculations and analysis to support modification and safe operation of plant systems
Provide field support for inspections of plant equipment and structures
Apply NRC codes, regulations, and industry practices (ASCE, AISC, ACI) to engineering work
Provide technical advice to other engineers and management in assigned areas
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (structural concentration preferred) from an ABET-accredited program, or equivalent degree (Physics, Chemistry, Math, or Engineering Technology from accredited institution with post-graduate ABET-accredited engineering degree), or valid U.S. Professional Engineer license
Relevant nuclear power plant engineering experience: Associate (0–2 years), Engineer (2–5 years), Senior Engineer (5–8 years), or Staff Engineer (8+ years)
Minimum 1 year of nuclear power plant experience required for all nuclear employees
Commitment to safety and quality assurance in all aspects of design and operations
Proficiency with engineering software (MATLAB, Excel, CAD) and advanced computer applications
Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing
Demonstrated analytical thinking and complex problem-solving abilities; ability to work independently or in team environment
Desired
Familiarity with NRC and INPO regulatory requirements for commercial nuclear power plants
Experience with 10 CFR 50.59 screens and evaluations
Nuclear Design Engineering experience with relevant analytical capability; qualification in Standard Design Process, Engineering Calculations, and Specifications
Professional Engineering license in Civil Engineering
Familiarity with crane design and applications including NUREG-0612
Experience with foundation, steel and concrete structures, pipe support, pipe stress, and rigging
Knowledge of primary systems (NSSS) and Balance of Plant (BOP) systems
Understanding of Engineering Specifications (Procurement, Design, Installation)
